Boost your sex drive with Omega-3

Thursday, 12 January 2012 13:17:17 Europe/London

Research has shown that libido is often the first thing to go, or decline, when women are under stress, have recently given birth or are going through the menopause. For many women (and their partners) a lower sex drive can be a huge problem and even put the relationship under pressure. A flagging libido is a complex problem that can have many different causes. Although it is quite common during the menopause, younger women can see their libido diminish as a result of stress, an unhealthy diet, weight gain, psychological or other problems.

This obviously represents a ‘gold mine’ for the pharmaceutical industry, when lower libido is diagnosed as a ‘medical problem’. More than twenty new drugs are currently being developed that should heighten the female sex drive in one way or another, ranging from nasal sprays with hormones that affect the areas in the brain that stimulate sexual urges, to creams containing nitroglycerine, a substance which relaxes blood vessels and stimulates blood flow. Whether, and when, these products will ever be marketed is by no means certain and, similar to the libido enhancing testosterone patch which has been available to women for some time, it is highly likely that they will only be available on prescription to a very limited group of women (i.e. those entering the menopause early as a result of surgical intervention).

There is, however, another important reason not to be too eager to resort to drugs for this problem, as many of them are associated with potentially risky side-effects. A typical example is Viagra, which can have an adverse effect on blood vessels and could potentially be problematic for the heart. It would be far better to look at, and try to tackle, the root of the problem.

Slim and sexy

The idea that aphrodisiacs (libido enhancing foods) such as oysters, lobster and caviar would help is of course rather far fetched, but food does have an impact on our sexual appetite. An American researcher has demonstrated that a combination of fish oil, dark chocolate and a controlled intake of refined carbohydrates (sugars) has a libido enhancing effect.

In her book, ‘The Orgasmic Diet’, the therapist Marrena Lindberg explains how just a few basic dietary changes can make a major difference to your sex life. Lindberg combines her own experience withextensive scientific research. She maintains that sexual dysfunction in women is all too often treated as a psychological problem, whereas in many cases it is merely due to nutritional deficiencies. The female body responds much quicker and more effectively to a change in diet than to psychotherapy.

One study highlighted that three out of four women noticed a fairly rapid increase in their libido with a healthy diet, Omega-3 supplementation and more exercise. An additional benefit of Marrena Lindberg’s diet is that it does not only increase libido but it also leads to weight loss. Her approach is supported by David Ferguson, a pharmacologist and chairman of the American Women’s Sexual Health Foundation and Maryon Stewart, founder of the Women’s Nutritional Advisory Service.

According to Marrena Lindberg, the Orgasmic Diet:

1. Raises the dopamine level in the brain

A daily intake of 3000 mg (in a ratio of 1700 mg EPA an 1300 mg DHA) raises the dopamine level in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter which is associated with desire and sexual pleasure. Clinical tests have shown that an increase in dopamine production is one of the ‘therapies’ that appear to be particularly successful in cases of sexual dysfunction. Omega-3 also promotes blood flow in the genital area.

In this case, eating more oily fish will not generate much benefit, as the daily requirement of EPA+DHA is too high. In addition to a daily highly concentrated fish oil supplement, a couple of squares of dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), each day can also help raise the dopamine level. People who are taking anti-coagulants should consult their physician first, before starting with 3 grams EPA+DHA per day as high doses of Omega-3 fatty acids can enhance the impact of these blood thinning substances.

2. Keeps the seratonin level under control

Serotonin is another significant neurotransmitter, which mainly promotes a feeling of wellbeing and cheerfulness. We need a sufficiently high serotonin level to ensure that we perceive natural hunger pangs and have enough energy to tackle stress. However, when the serotonin level becomes too high, you will focus too much on all the things you need to do and your interest in sex will decline. In other words, it inhibits the mental switch to the relaxed mood needed for romance.

A higher intake of Omega-3 combined with a minimum intake of sugars, starch and caffeine, will help keep your serotonin level under control.

3. Raises the testosterone level

Studies have shown that women with a healthy sex drive have a high testosterone level. Even though testosterone is a ‘male’ hormone, women also need it. It is produced by the adrenal glands and ovaries but is suppressed by the chemical globulin. The trick is to minimise the amount of globulin in your body. The best way to achieve this according to Lindberg is to ensure that each meal contains 30% protein, to cut back on starch and sugar and to replace it with fruit and vegetables. A daily supplement of zinc and magnesium also helps to keep the amount of globulin under control. A good general multi-vitamin and mineral supplement should suffice for this purpose.

  • Marrena Lindberg’s Orgasmic Diet in a nutshell:
  • Take a pure and highly concentrated fish oil supplement, with 3000 mg EPA and DHA (www.minami-nutrition.com), and multi-mineral supplement with zinc and magnesium each day.
  • Ensure that each meal contains 30% protein.
  • Your fat intake should amount to approximately 30% of your total calorie intake and should preferably consist of mono-unsaturated fatty acids such as olive oil.
The rest of your diet should consist of carbohydrates. However, avoid white bread, sugar, potatoes and other starchy foods. Eat as many fruits and vegetables as you like.

Top Detox Tips

Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:06:49 Europe/London

Do you feel sluggish and low on energy? Toxic substances are all around us...learn how to detoxify your body and experience vibrant health.

Top Detox Tips

Because of our modern lifestyle, we’re exposed to more toxins than our bodies are designed to handle. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat may contain toxic chemicals. And if waste builds up, we get sick. It stands to reason, then, that detoxification should be your firststep to a healthier you. Try the following five tips and this delicate process will put you on the fast track to a better sleep, consistent energy, clear skin, healthy organs, more clarity and a revved-up sex drive:

Fix your gut

Did you know that 70 percent of your immune power resides in your digestive tract? Unfortunately, because of our daily exposure to toxins, our intestinal health is under massive attack. Needless to say, you don't want that to happen. Eat real food rich in antioxidants and fiber, take probiotics and stay away from pesticides, preservatives, refined sugar and antibiotics.

Hydrate

"Drink enough water!" You've heard it a million times - and with a good reason. Each one of us is made up of over 70 percent water and that's why we need to drink enough fluids in order to help acid wastes flow out. And not just any fluids - remember that if you don't filter your water, your body will experience the negative results.

Detox your mind and spirit

Detoxification is not just about what you drink or eat - it's about what you think, too! Put some time aside to relax deeply every day to inhibit sympathetic nervous activity.Try meditation and deep breathing and replace online surfing with real-world activities. You'll feel more focused and enjoy a steady supply of energy.

Get moving

Sooner or later, your tissue will suffocate in their own waste products if you don't exercise regularly. So move your body (at least 35 minutes a day) and let your blood and lymphatic circulation do their job.

Try sauna

If you're walking around with toxins in your tissues, you'll never get a skin that glows. Fortunately, you can always utilize sauna to induce sweating and stimulate a deep cleansing process. The sauna heat releases both chemical and heavy metal toxins under the skin so that they can be purged through respiration - along with various other waste materials. As a result, you'll experience a level of renewal that is hard to surpass.

Detoxification is as invaluable for our health as the beating of the heart. Maximizing your body's detoxification capacity will soon bring a healthy domino effect, allowing you to take charge of your own health and well-being.

You can now tell your friends on Facebook!

Wednesday, 31 March 2010 12:07:24 Europe/London

I just added a "Tell your friends about us" section to our Facebook page. This, unsurprisingly, allows you to view a list of your friends, and suggest to the ones you think would be interested in what we do, that they become a fan of our page. Doing this will let them keep up with the latest news, offers, and upcoming events that we run.

We've been using Facebook a bit recently to connect with people who are interested in the types of products we sell, and the various events we've been running over the past few months. We wanted a way to be easily able to share what's going on, and to get feedback from people who are interested. We already send out a monthly newsletter (you've already subscribed...haven't you!), but Facebook allows things to be a lot more interactive.

So, if you haven't become a fan on Facebook yet, why not do it now and let us know what you think of the site!. If you're already a fan, and you think some of your friends might be interested too, you can suggest it to them now (...and we'd love to hear what you think of the site too!).

If anyone (of the geeks among you!) would like to know how to add one of those boxes to their own page, feel free to leave me a comment below and I can post the code here.

Natasha’s Living Food - A Tasting

Tuesday, 23 February 2010 14:23:37 Europe/London

This Saturday (27th Feb) we will be hosting a product tasting of the Natasha’s Living Food range from 12 noon until 3pm.

Natashas Living Food LogoNatasha’s Living Food range has a variety of delicious products including both sweet and savoury treats, made with raw foods and superfoods. All of Natasha’s products are free of gluten, wheat and refined sugar, and are 100% vegan. Amongst the delicacies you can experience at Natasha’s food tasting are – humous with herbs & spices, superfood raw chocolates, savoury spiced crackers, nutritious energy bars and cheesy kale crunches.

The Raw and Living foods movement is a diet based on naturally grown wild or organically and sustainably raised fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains.

Natasha’s range of Raw and Living foods are completely free of animal products, and chemically processed or pasteurised ingredients. The range uses fairly-traded ingredients wherever available, and also uses organic ingredients. Many of Natasha’s products also contain superfoods.

Most importantly, during the preparation of raw food dishes, nothing is cooked, at least in the traditional sense. Raw foods contain live enzymes that aid digestion, which activate as they are consumed. Heating foods to high temperatures causes those enzymes to die, and destroys nutrients, minerals, amino acids and vitamins, and alters the natural metabolic structure of the food. The beauty of raw foods is that the ingredients are very simple. Because nothing is processed, everything comes in its raw, natural state.

Feel free to drop by and try out some of the tasty nibbles we'll have on display. Not sure where we are? - here's a page with a map!
